Travel Safety in United States

Overview

The two main security risks in the US are crime and terrorism. Both of these are largely limited to major urban centres. Within these cities, petty crime is more of an issue than violent crime, but both tend to occur in lower-income areas.

Large-scale terrorist attacks conducted by international extremist groups have taken place in major cities such as New York and Washington DC. While this risk persists, there is also a threat of smaller attacks by local extremists (both right-wing and left-wing) and individuals who claim affiliation to major terrorist organisations.

Demonstrations take with relative frequency in US cities, but generally conclude peacefully. The exception to this are demonstrations related to sensitive issues such as race relations, which turn violent more regularly.

Kidnapping is not considered a notable risk to foreign nationals travelling in the country.

The US is prone to severe weather that includes hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes.

Medical facilities are very good in cities and adequate in most other areas except isolated, rural parts of the country.
