Travel Safety in United Kingdom

Overview

There are limited security concerns associated with travel to the United Kingdom (UK).

There is an ongoing risk of terrorism in the country due to the activities and threats posed largely by international extremist organisations. This may currently be aggravated by the current Middle East conflict involving the USA, Iran and Israel (given that the UK is regarded as a US ally). In the past, London’s transport system, government establishments and areas frequented by the public have been targeted. More recently, these have included small-scale incidents involving knife and vehicle attacks. A secondary terrorist threat exists in Northern Ireland, where nationalists have conducted attacks in the past. These have generally targeted security interests and are unlikely to affect people who do not frequent such facilities.

Crime in the UK is mostly petty in nature, and the risk is highest in major cities (especially London). Phone-snatching in urban areas is a particular concern. Similarly, these urban centres are more likely to be the location of demonstrations. Currently, the risks of kidnapping and conflict in the UK are negligible.

The medical infrastructure in the UK is suitable to treat almost any condition, but the availibility of care may be limited in rural areas.
