Travel Safety in Puerto Rico

Overview

The primary security concern on Puerto Rico is crime. Petty crime is somewhat prevalent and includes bag-snatching, pickpocketing and the theft of unattended items. Violent crime is far less common; it is predominantly drug- or gang-related and most likely to take place in high-density, lower-income areas of San Juan and Bayamón.

Demonstrations occasionally take place in San Juan but tend to conclude without violence.

Currently, there are limited risks of kidnapping, terrorism, and conflict on the island.

Medical facilities are adequate, but may be limited outside major urban centres.
