Travel Safety in Portugal

Overview

Portugal is generally safe. The main security concern to travellers is petty theft. Cases of pickpocketing, purse-snatching and theft from cars have been reported around popular areas such as holiday properties, railway stations, beaches, restaurants and museums in major tourist areas, including in Lisbon. There have also been occasional incidents of robberies and assaults on foreigners in Lisbon and the Algarve area.

Currently, terrorism is not a major concern in Portugal compared to other European countries.

Demonstrations frequently occur in large urban centres such as Lisbon and Porto, but do not commonly turn violent.

There is no major concern of kidnapping or conflict in the country.

Medical facilities are widely available and generally of a good standard.
