Travel Safety in Laos
Overview
The security risks in Laos vary according to the area and the profile of the traveller.
Petty crime is a concern in the capital, Vientiane, and other popular tourist destinations such as Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. More violent crime, including banditry, is somewhat of an issue in rural and remote areas of Laos, including areas bordering Myanmar (Burma).
The government has in recent years been in dispute with local populations in Xaisomboun province. This has led to increased risks of crime, conflict, terrorism and civil unrest in the province.
There is no other ongoing conflict in Laos, but landmines and unexploded ordnance from historic events remain a concern in rural areas of some provinces. Demonstrations occasionally infrequently and generally conclude peacefully. The exception to this is protests in Xaisomboun province, which are prone to violence.
Outside of Xaisomboun province, there are no major concerns of terrorism and kidnapping.
Private medical facilities are available in Vientiane, but healthcare services are limited elsewhere.
