Travel Safety in Israel
Overview
Israel is engaged in an ongoing regional conflict involving Iran and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant group. Most notably, there has been an escalation of attacks, which have seen drones and other projectiles entering Israel. Major cities such as Tel Aviv have been most significantly affected, but no area is considered immune. Targets have included transport hubs, military infrastructure, commercial centres and areas frequented by foreigners.
In addition, Israel is engaged in active conflict with the Gaza-based Hamas militant group, which has resulted in displacement, destruction and thousands of fatalities in the Gaza enclave. There is an ongoing risk of terrorism stemming from Israel’s administration of the Palestinian territories as well as its foreign policy relating to Iran and Hezbollah. Travellers should monitor the potential for terrorist incidents targeting interests associated with the United States; civil unrest relating to political and conflict events; and the potential that Iran and Hezbollah will engage Israel in further direct conflict.
The risks of kidnapping, conflict and terrorism are also elevated along Israel's borders with Syria. Similarly, these risks are acute on the northern Lebanese border, where clashes with Hezbollah take place. Demonstrations occur regularly and may cause disruption. Crime is of little concern in the country, with opportunitic petty crime taking place far more regularly than violent crime. Medical facilities are adequate; however, the current conflict could yet put strain on available infrastructure.
