Travel Safety in Belize
Overview
The main security risk in Belize is crime. Incidents of petty crime take place in most parts of the country, including areas popular with tourists. Violent crime, mostly of a gang-related nature, is a particular problem in parts of Belize City, most notably in the southern areas of the city (south of Haulover Creek Canal).
Demonstrations can occur at any time in the capital, Belmopan, as well as in Belize City. These gatherings may turn violent. Several areas along the western border with Guatemala, particularly in the Cayo and Toledo districts have active military patrols due in part due to occasional border disputes between Belize and Guatemala. The risks of conflict and terrorism in these districts are marginally higher compared to other areas of Belize.
In comparison to the rest of Central America, kidnappings in Belize are relatively rare.
Medical facilities are very limited. Only basic medical care is available outside Belize City.
