Travel Safety in Austria

Overview

There are very few security risks in Austria. Crime, although rare throughout the country, is marginally more likely to take place in Vienna, and these crimes are usually of a petty and opportunistic nature.

Austria shares the Western Europe-wide risk of terrorism; two major attacks occured in 2020 and 2025 that were carried out by Islamist extremist-linked radicals. However, in comparison to other European countries, terrorist incidents are infrequent.

The risks posed by kidnapping and conflict are currently not a significant concern.

In general, medical facilities are good, but emergency support in rural areas may not be immediately available.
